From its starting point in Illinois to its end in coastal California, U.S. Route 66 (also known as the Main Street of America, the Mother Road or the Will Rogers Highway) showcases a variety of climates, landscapes and cultures along its path. While it’s still possible to drive the entire route, we’ve decided to contain our trip itinerary to the westernmost portion of the route, starting in northwestern Arizona and ending at the Los Angeles coast.
Check out this itinerary for an action-packed western road trip!
Petrified Forest National Park
Petrified Forest National Park is home to the Painted Desert, petrified wood, badland and grassland ecosystems and untouched scenic vistas. In addition to hiking, horseback riding, cycling, geo-caching and other outdoors activities, you’ll also find plenty of educational exhibits and museums to help you understand the unique history of the area. While there is no camping allowed at the park, there are plenty of RV parks and campgrounds for you in the surrounding areas.
Flagstaff, Arizona
The next stop on our Route 66 route is Flagstaff, Arizona, home to a Spectacle of Festivals throughout the year. Camp out at the Flagstaff KOA and spend your days exploring everything Flagstaff has to offer, including plenty of guided tours, hikes, restaurants, shopping, concerts and more. You can even plan your trip around one of the many summer festivals, including the Flagstaff Folk Festival in late June, the Shakespeare Festival in July and the Navajo Festival in August.
Barstow, California
You can’t hit this leg of the highway without stopping in Barstow, California. Not only is Barstow home to the Route 66 Mother Road Museum, but it also offers access to the Mojave National Reserve where you’ll find sand dunes, volcanic cones, Joshua Tree forests, canyons, mountains, mesas and more! Fans of history and the outdoors will find plenty to do in Barstow.
Los Angeles, California
At the end of Route 66, you run into Los Angeles, California, the second largest city in the United States and home to Hollywood. Whether you’re looking to hike the canyons, dine at some of the most well-known restaurants in the country, shop on Rodeo Drive or catch a celebrity walking down the street, you’ll find no shortage of activities for every type of traveler in the city of stars!
