Visiting your local farmers’ markets is perhaps the best way to get the freshest fruits and vegetables for your meals. Purchasing locally grown produce allows you to give back to the community, so farmers can continue to provide the freshest products.
Finding the right market is not always the easiest when searching around the country. Most produce are seasonal. That means you will find various types of fruits and vegetables at different times of the year. It’s important to find the freshest possible to help make your meal more delicious. Here are some tips that may help you when shopping for produce.
1. Avoid Shopping at Peak Times
The best times to go to the market is early mornings, because the best of the pickings always go first. However, when you go later or near the end of the market time, you are more likely to be able to make a deal with the seller.
2. Doing a Little Research Helps
To ensure that you will come home with some of the best tasting fruits and vegetables, it’s best to know in which season the produce ripens. For instance, Apples tend to be best in the late summer and fall. Avocados and blueberries, on the other hand, are best in the middle of the summer months. During the winter, Broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower are best. Carrots and collard greens can be harvested all year round.
3. Along With Reusable Bags, Cash Works Best
When you arrive at a farmers’ market prepared, the entire shopping process works best for you and the farmers. Most markets still only take cash. However, some merchants are now equipped with mobile devices to accept charge cards. By bringing along your reusable bags, you also help the vendors also keep the cost of the produce lower by not having to supply bags.
