Just southeast of Austin, Texas’ capital city and a bit east of Houston is the great historic city of San Antonio. Visitors are often delighted with the many highlights the city offers from its corner of the Lone Star State. If you are into history, culture or shopping, San Antonio has entertainment opportunities waiting for you.
Remember the Alamo
The Alamo is the most famous of all the attractions in the Texas city. The former San Antonio mission and famous battleground played a pivotal role in the revolution of Texas. Heroes like Col. William Travis, Jim Bowie and Davie Crockett became legends making their last stand trying to defend the Alamo against Gen. Santa Anna. Over 2.5 million visitors have come to the historic site to learn more about Texas history and pay respect to the fallen warriors. The Alamo is located at 300 Alamo Plaza in San Antonio.
Missions National Historic Park
In the 18th century people in South Texas felt that their core values and beliefs were under attack. Often, there were Apache Indian raids from the north. People arriving from Mexico were carriers of deadly diseases and a long-term drought made water use a struggle. The only places most people felt almost completely safe was staying in one of the missions. To become a member or citizen of the mission, a person had to declare allegiance to the Spanish king and accept a new religion. There are four missions that show the remains of their lives:
- Mission San Jose, located at 6701 San Jose Dr.
- Mission Concepcion, located at 807 Mission Rd.
- Mission San Juan, located at 9101 Graf Rd.
- Mission Espada at 10040 Espada Rd.
Church services today still welcome visitors to tour the sites.
Stroll along the San Antonio River
In the 1950’s San Antonio converted a community park into The River Walk. Restaurants, shops and hotels were built along the water with a Tex-Mex style. Today, the natural beauty and constant fun blends effortlessly as the experience will help you travel back in time.
Walk beside the lazy river, take in a cruise on the river, dine on a delicious meal and dance all night…. The River Walk offers all these opportunities and more.
